NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WJHL) — Eastman Chemical Co.'s sulfur dioxide emissions in an area that includes a Kingsport elementary school still exceed maximum allowable federal levels nine years after the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) designated the area as a 'nonattainment' area. The information is part of the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) audit released last week. It reveals the area around Kingsport is the only one in Tennessee with nonattainment of emissions for any of six air pollutants overseen by EPA.
